A Helpful Guide to Local Hiking with Your Pooch ![]() ![]() ![]() The performance may also be used to teach his opponents a thing or two thus he is said to be “putting on a clinic.” ![]() “Putting on a clinic” refers to how a player plays on such a high level that he is practically a man among boys. A “heat check” is applied when a player who made a few shots in a row tries more and more difficult shots to see if he can keep the streak going. ![]() That is not the reputation you’d want in basketball, and no one wants to play with a known “chucker.” A “chucker” is a player who attempts many shots but with little to no success. That way, his teammates can quickly throw him an outlet pass in case of a miss. A basketball player is said to be “cherry-picking” when he hangs back on his own court and leaves the other four of his teammates to defend. When someone says, “You got too much sauce,” it means the player mentioned has too much swag or is too cool. “Sauce” is a crossover term that originated from hip-hop artists but more or less has the same meaning when used in basketball. When an offensive player brings the ball from the backcourt, and the defender pokes it and steals it, it’s like “stealing cookies” from a child. “Stealing cookies” in basketball refers to a specific type of steal. “Making it rain” is often the term used when a team or a player is hitting shots from everywhere, perhaps from three-point territory. Whenever you hear the term “hops” used in a basketball context, that refers to the jumping ability of a player. The icing on the cake is called the “dagger.” A player from Team A hits a three-pointer to make the score 108-100, effectively putting the icing on the cake. As an example, imagine this scenario: Team A leads Team B, 105-100, with 30 seconds remaining and A in possession of the ball. A dagger is a shot, possibly in the closing moments, that basically puts the game out of reach. Sometimes, this makes the defender fall backwards as if he were skating. If you make a move that leads to a blow-by, defenders often scramble through their own momentum. For example, if a player attempts a corner three-pointer and hits the side of the backboard, that shot is called a “brick.” Getting “stuffed” or “denied” means to get your shot blocked. The defender is often caught slipping or stumbling like his ankles are broken. A crossover dribble is a ballhandling maneuver where the offensive player fakes a man out by selling one direction but going the other way. An “ankle-breaker” is a slang term for the crossover dribble. Police tips often come in through phone calls, and the coin needed to make a phone call is a “dime.” A “dime” is the basketball slang term for “assist.” This term probably came from the idea of helping or assisting the police with valuable information. ![]() Many of these are extremely creative and funny that some may wonder, “Where did that one come from?” Here are some slang basketball terms that you may find strange: Watching basketball long enough makes you in contact with a lot of basketball slang. Seeing a “wet” jumper go in will do that to a basketball player. Basketball is not a game for the low self-esteem and confidence gets you a long way. However, even if the ball touches the rim or backboard, some basketball players or supporters may continue to use the word “wet.” That’s because the ball may still produce that ‘swish’ sound as it passes through the hoop.įor many players, seeing that their jumper is “wet” gives them so much confidence. And it’s described as wet, just like the water in a calm lake. That’s the sound of a wet jumper– swish! It does not hit any part of the metal rim, so it doesn’t have that “clang” sound. Imagine a small rock dropped in the middle of the calm lake. What is a Wet Jumper in Basketball?Ī “wet” jumper refers to a jump shot that goes into the hoop with nothing but the sound of the net. As a result, certain fans and spectators frequently use phrases or remarks such as, ‘he made a wet shot.’ Some basketball fans would also use the word ‘wet’ when a player goes on a shooting streak. For instance, the term could also refer to a successful shot made by the player. However, they are also other used for the term. In short, “wet” simply means “splashing the net,” referring to a perfect shot in basketball that did not touch any part of the rim as it goes through the basket. The player who made the shot often says ‘wet,’ as many NBA players do when successfully executing this maneuver. “Wet” is a basketball slang term used to describe a shot that makes a “swish” sound as it goes through the net. It turns out that there are specific nucleotide sequences called origins of replication where replication begins. It is now known that DNA pol III is the enzyme required for DNA synthesis DNA pol I and DNA pol II are primarily required for repair. In prokaryotes, three main types of polymerases are known: DNA pol I, DNA pol II, and DNA pol III. When the bond between the phosphates is broken, the energy released is used to form the phosphodiester bond between the incoming nucleotide and the growing chain. The addition of nucleotides requires energy this energy is obtained from the nucleotides that have three phosphates attached to them, similar to ATP which has three phosphate groups attached. One of the key players is the enzyme DNA polymerase, also known as DNA pol, which adds nucleotides one by one to the growing DNA chain that are complementary to the template strand. The process is quite rapid and occurs without many mistakes.ĭNA replication employs a large number of proteins and enzymes, each of which plays a critical role during the process. Divers wear small white LED tank lights for safety. We'll make sure you're well taken care of and your divemaster will brief you on the boat regarding entry, dive profile, and exit. If this is your first night dive, awesome! The manta ray night dive is a super-easy night dive and perfect for your first. The manta dive works so well because we’ve learned to interact with these animals in a responsible, safe way. We can’t touch the animals! They have a protective mucus coating their bodies and human touch interferes with this protective layer, causing lesions and sick mantas. It is very important that divers stay on the bottom and snorkers stay as flat as possible on the surface, leaving the water column to the mantas. The rays somersault above divers & below snorkelers until the last boats head back to harbor & the lights go out. Snorkelers have a very similar experience about 30’ above hanging on a floating raft with bright lights. Divers drop to the bottom and sit around the “fire” and wait for plankton & mantas. Our divemasters place a crate of dive lights on the sandy bottom that we refer to as the “campfire”. We arrive at the manta site just before sunset, and spend time briefing about the animals and the dive while enjoying sunset. Our manta ray night dive is one of the top rated dives in the world- a bucket list item for any SCUBA diver! There is so much ambient light in the water it's almost like diving during the day. The Manta Ray Advocates and the Manta Pacific Research Foundation are local nonprofits dedicated to the protection of these animals. While they are threatened in other parts of the world from overfishing and ocean pollution, they are revered here in Hawaii. Hawaiian lore says manta rays had the important task of catching the setting sun in their large mouths and swimming it to the other side of the island for sunrise. They are an aumakua, a Hawaiian family god, often a deified ancestor that has left earth and returned from the heavens in a different form. In Hawaii, manta rays are protected species, and it is illegal to hunt or fish for them. On good nights we’ll see 5+ rays, and sometimes it gets truly insane with 20-30 feeding mantas at the same dive site! The manta ray night dive has earned a reputation as the best night dive in the world- it’s truly phenomenal. They’ll come close -very close- and somersault over and over while feeding inches away from snorkelers and divers. Bright dive lights attract plankton in the water at night, and the swarming plankton makes an excellent free meal for these hungry rays. Part of the success of Kona’s famous night dive can be attributed to the unique relationship we’ve made with these animals over the last 40-50 years. Manta rays have a long lifespan, and are quite intelligent species that learn over time and have distinct personalities. Kona is home to a population of around 250 rays, identifiable by unique spot patterns on their bellies. You can see the gill rakers inside this open manta's mouth. We often see feeding rays somersault through especially plankton-rich water. Can you imagine having to survive by eating a diet of sprinkles? Mantas forage for zooplankton along the sunny surface during daytime. ![]() As filter feeders, mantas consume a massive amount of zooplankton in the form of shrimp, krill, and planktonic crabs (around 10-15% of their body weight each week). They don’t have stingers, barbs, or teeth- they are truly gentle giants. Though they are closely related to sharks and stingrays, manta rays are completely harmless. They are also known as ‘devilfish’ or ‘devil rays’ because of their horn-shaped cephalic fins- a colorful name from imaginative sailors with fear of the unknown. Their name comes from the Portuguese and Spanish word for “mantle”, a blanket-shaped trap used traditionally to catch these fish. alfredi is the species making regular appearances on our Manta Ray Night Dive.
